Citizens of Milan,

we need your attention and collaboration. We've decided to run for mayors in Milan. We love this city but we've figured out that we like it less and less. It's not unusual to find it dull, unfair, dreary, hostile and oppressive. This is not a city anymore, it's a piece of land with buildings on it, it's a piece of world with individuals living in it without any interaction, it's a bad collection of difficult stories. For us, on the contrary, this is a city, meaning that it must be considered as a city and it must turn into a city again.
This is a city, but we just forgot it.
Tired of complaining and listening to complaints, we've decided to move into action: you'll find us on the ballot paper with an independent list, called questa è una città (this is a city).
We want Milan to return to being a community, with a common dream and a project. We have a programme for the entire city – it seems like a utopia, but it's viable instead. We know it's possible, we know how to do it, we must be all together.
On May 28th, 2006, Milan's mayor will be selected; it seems like a routine electoral duty, it seems like a routine useless act, it seems like we're all exhausted and hopeless. And it also seems everything's already been decided, that he or she will be elected anyway, that it's not much of a choice.
Quite the contrary. These events are not unavoidable. Milan must not be a battlefield between nationwide political groups, nor the arena where right-wing and left-wing strengths are tested; we don't deserve to be considered as a stronghold of economic powers. At local elections, there's no sense in voting for political alignments on the basis of ideology without even reading their programmes.

That's why, on this occasion, we don't run neither with the Right nor with the Left. We run as a group* to administrate this city all together, well aware that changes are possible and that longing for a better life is wholly justified.

* The 46 candidates stem from esterni, a group that has devoted itself to Milan, to its inhabitants or occasional visitors, to social interaction, public spaces and suburbs for eleven years; in a nutshell: it has tried to turn Milan into a better city. Come what may with the elections, esterni will keep doing it.
